It’s a job nobody wants to do… With extremely hot summers and super wet spring and winters in the south, it become a dirty, dangerous and dreadful duty.  We’re talking about cleaning out your gutters.  Typically you will want to clean your gutters at least twice per year.  Some experts will say to clean them in the late spring and again in the late summer or early fall.  If you have a lot of trees above your house, you may actually consider inspecting your gutters about every three months.

If you don’t clean your gutters regularly, you can expect clogged gutters and downspouts which can create massive problems.  When the dead leaves in your gutters begin to decompose, it can cause the water to become murky and moldy which can lead to health problems if it gets into your home. Clogged gutters can also cause your roof to leak.  Another common problem is when critters or small animals such as squirrels or birds begin making nests in your gutters.

Clogged Gutter Warning Signs

When the weather begins changing, you may see some of the following warning signs that your gutters need to be cleaned:

  • Puddles of water around your house. If you see standing water on your lawn, near the foundation or on the driveway, this may mean your downspouts are not properly working.
  • Signs of animals or bugs. If you are seeing bugs in the house or hearing mice in the walls, they could be making a home in your gutters.
  • Water in places it should not be. If you are seeing pools of water in your basement or inside the house, this is an important factor you don’t want to overlook. Your foundation or roof may be at risk so be sure to check your gutters right away.

If you dread the terrible chore of cleaning out your gutters, keep in mind you can always use eco gutter guards which will keep your gutters clean year round.  We install them here at Southern Siding Company so be sure to give us a call at 770-775-9374 for more information.
