If you’re planning to repair or re-roof your home and need metal roofing companies near Jackson, GA, you’ll have to make several decisions in the process. One of the first is figuring out what metal panel gauge you need. Gauge refers to the thickness of the panels, commonly ranging from a score of 22 (the thickest) to 29 (the thinnest). Selecting the right gauge is important – too thick, and you might end up spending more money than you need to – too thin, and your home might be susceptible to weather damage.

When choosing the thickness of your metal roof panel gauge, it’s important to understand the specific needs of your home. Location, structure, and climate will all factor into your decision, so here is a quick guide to finding your ideal metal roofing panel gauge:

22-Gauge – The thickest option, 22-gauge metal roofs are known for their high durability. These panels are great at protecting certain types of buildings, such as warehouses, garages and barns, but they usually also have the highest price tag. However, if you can spend the extra money, this type of roof has the highest safety factor when compared to other panels.

24-Gauge – With only a 0.0060 inch difference from 22-gauge steel (0.0299), people like this option for its extreme weather resistance and long-lasting appearance. Like the 22-gauge, it can be more expensive due to it’s thickness.

26-Gauge – As the industry-standard thickness for commercial or residential buildings, property owners enjoy 26-gauge panels for their mid-range price tag and moderate weather protection. However, 26-gauge will not hold up against extreme weather like the thicker options will.

29-Gauge – A common choice for residential homeowners is 29-gauge panels. Because this is the thinnest option, these panels are less durable, especially in dangerous weather, but they remain a popular choice due to their low price.
